The main event of the Club Year is the annual Devon Coastal Run which takes place on the third weekend of July (the 2012 Coastal Run will take place on Sunday 15th) and takes in some 70 miles of Devons most picturesque and glorious scenery. Commencing at Haldon on the outskirts of Exeter entrants proceed along the side of the River Exe through rolling countrytside to Starcross, Dawlish, Teignmouth (where entrants halt on the seafront for 10 to 15 minutes for refreshments), then over the picturesque Shaldon Bridge which crosses the River Teign and on to Torbay, (with a further short stop at Quay West Goodrington Sands) The route then turns inland to Totnes, Buckfastleigh, the charming old town of Ashburton, passing the lovely old church and then through the centre which is known as "The Bull Ring" and then onwards to the Rallyfield at Mill Marsh Park at Bovey Tracey. Vehicles assembling here from Mid-day on, drivers and passengers then go on to enjoy hunting through the various autojumble stands, admiring some 300 assembled vehicles from Motor Cycles, Vintage Cars (pre 1930) Post Vintage (pre-war), Classic Cars up to the early 1980`s, Vans, Lorrys, Fire Engines, Busses, Coaches, Heavy Commercials, Military/Emergency vehicles. Tiverton Band is usually on hand to supply the musical entertainment and an Autojumble where you can search for this elusive part plus food and ice cream vendors

During the Summer Months the evening meetings can be visits to various places of interest, such as the Fire Service Control Room, this we really enjoyed by club members who gained considerable knowledge as to how these highly dedicated people look after us as residents. During the long light eveings, runs to Country Pubs in the heart of Dartmoor are also highly enjoyed. The annual bar-b-q, always the month following the Coastal Run, a "thank you" to all those members who gave their time and hard work to make the July event the success it has been for the past 29 years is always well attended, being August it has been wet on occassions but the fun still goes on! With Autumns arrival in September we return to the "Club Pub" at Kenn where the indoor programme restarts.
March
1st 2012.
The March 2012 edition of this magazine is a must for all members of the Historic Transport Club as you will find within a four page feature of the club`s own Leyland Octopus, there are excellent pictures and a detailed history of the vehicle from 1951 to the present day. When this issue is now longer available from your local newsagent back copies can be obtained from "Back Numbers Dept.,Classsic and Vintage Commercials,Kelsey Publishing Group, Cudham Tythe Barn, Berrys Hill, Cudham, Kent, TN16 3AG.
The Scam below is featured on the CanAm Club website, this is a first class club for those interested in American and Canadian Vehicles and is based in Dorset. a very active Club with many activities.
"Have come across one of the more believable scams whilst selling..........
A man rings up having got your number from the advert (in this case an Ebay classified) and is very interested in the car. Wants to negociate a price and also delivery to port. Says car will be going to Scandinavia (in this case Sweden) and will transfer payment into bank.........no Nigerian cheques here..... He asks for copies to be faxed, yes faxed to his office in Sweden of the docs including log book and also a bill of sale. Luckily, I obscured certain vital information just to be safe and the man phoned several times to persuade me to send full details for import purposes (not true). At this point the man would have been able to apply for the log book and being in posession of a bill of sale ( I sent an invoice with amount payable and NOT a bill of sale) could, in theory, lawfully own your car. Any attempt to take your car is then not considered theft and you've gotta problem. This feller seems to target modestly priced cars which I guess he hopes are parked outside at the owners address.......easy to take I suppose........!!! This man is very plausible and used the name Mats with me and also fake Ebay username and feedback in addition to an iffy website. BE WARNED..........."
It just shows how careful you have to be now when you sell a vehicle, Ed.

The Historic Commercial Vehicle Run took place earlier this month and for those interested in this event you will find a link in this article which will take you to a very interesting web site, that of "Bonzer Photos". This site is well worth looking at as many of the vehicless entered have been photographed on route and copies are available for purchase.
In addition to this event there are many other photos of vehicles competing at various venues.
Vehicle
Heights & Low Bridges
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs have an article in their 2nd Newsletter of 2011 in respect of the above and it has been requested that participating Clubs should bring the following paragraph to members notice.
"In general, bridges with a clear height of five metres (16ft 6 inches) or less are required to be signed with their height. Should you be aware of a bridge locally to you that is missing its sign on one side or the other (or in your opinion is insufficiently signed) please report this to the council with responsibility for highways. Likewise, if you know of a road with overhanging trees, this should also be reported to the authority, who have a statutory duty to coordinate landowners trimming trees located on the highway."
Luckly the Leyland Atlantian pictured had its top removed intentionally by Devon General where it saw service in Torbay during the Summer months of the 1960`s and beyond.

A web site well worth exploring is that of
Vintage Spirit Magazine

Institute of Waste Management Exhibition
An interesting collection of Commercial Vehicles which were on display at Paignton Seafront during the above exhibition in 2007.
